Park District prepares for Overlook Adventure Mini Golf Course opening on Saturday

DECATUR--  The Decatur Park District is set to unveil its first installment of Overlook Adventure Park on Saturday with the opening of its new 36-hole mini golf facility.

Nearly 18 months after breaking ground in Nelson Park, the facility, which houses two 36-hole mini golf courses, a large clubhouse, and two restaurants, park district staff say they are anticipating a huge turnout on Saturday.

“We put many months of planning and design into this facility and I think people are going to be very pleased,” district executive director Bill Clevenger said.  “We had some very creative designs going into the process and our design firm did a great job of making it all work together.  To say I’ m pleased would be an understatement.”

The theme of both courses ties into Scovill Zoo, which is located just across the rt. 36 bridge from where the new courses are built, “We want this space to all sort of tie in together, Nelson Park, the dock area, Scovill, our vision is that this area of the city will be a place for families to go and spend a few hours or even an entire afternoon.”

Golfing isn’t the only thing you will be able to do, the facility will also house two eateries, Cherry Berry Frozen Yogurt and Ted’s Taters are also opening soon.  Clevenger says both restaurants are on target to be open by the end of the month.

The mini golf courses are the first installment of what the district hopes to be many attractions in the area they have targeted as Overlook Adventure Park.  Clevenger says plans for batting cages, a water park, and other things are still in the works.  “I would say we are happy with where we are at now in terms of facilities being built.  Obviously we opened the new docks last year and this year we have the mini golf course, there are other things in the works but we are moving forward with a piece by piece approach.

Overlook Adventure Mini Golf opens to the public on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Regular hours for the facility throughout the remainder of the season are: Monday-Friday 4 p.m. until 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. until 10 p.m., and Sunday noon until 10 p.m.
