County pays $7.6 million to crash victim

DECATUR—A Decatur man who lost both his legs due to an accident involving a former sheriff’s deputy was paid a record amount by the County in a court settlement last week.
Tom Lennox, of Decatur, was struck from behind by Brian Duff’s squad car as he was putting a mattress into the back of a pickup truck, driven by friend Lloyd Dial.  Lennox was pinned between the front end of the squad car and the rear end of the pickup truck until emergency crews arrived to pry him out.
Police reports say that Dial had pulled over to the side of the road in the 2700 block of N. Jasper Street and put his hazard lights on before Lennox got out of the car.
After a lengthy trial, the County paid Lennox and his family a $7.6 million settlement for his injuries sustained in the accident.  After the accident Duff was put on indefinite leave before he was eventually let go from the department.
Duff reached a plea deal for the pair of traffic offenses that included aggravated reckless driving.
