DECATUR-- Manicures, massages, and chocolate covered strawberries accompanied fitness demonstrations and health screenings as St. Mary’s Hospital and the Prairie Heart institute of Illinois wrapped up the 10th anniversary of Go Red for Women month.
Jeanne Marie Kairouz, Cardiologist with St. Mary’s said the celebration was a nice way to wrap up an important month.
“We thought given the fact that it’s the 10th anniversary of the campaign that it would be really lovely to put on a huge event with speeches to raise awareness and also provide food and entertainment and other things just to have an overall wonderful time for women.”
“I think that there is a very good turnout this evening, it seems that quite a few people have shown interest in coming out, having a good time, and hopefully learning something.” Kairouz said.
Within the past 10 years cardiovascular disease has killed more women than all forms of cancer.
She also added that it is important for women to get tested for cardiovascular disease just as often as men because often times their signs aren’t as obvious.
