Macon County Sheriff Tom Schneider says the Association believes the debate should be focused on mental health issues, not restricting the rights of legal gun owners, “the sheriff’s departments unanimously supported the fact of not banning any guns or weapons and thought there should be more of an emphasis on mental health background checks.”
In addition to stricter mental health guidelines, the Sheriffs Association recommends allowing law enforcement access to mental health records, addressing violent video games, and vigorous prosecution of those who violate existing gun laws.
