Illinois set to practice earthquake preparedness

SPRINGFIELD-- It’s almost time for the “Great Shake Out.”

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is encouraging participation in a multi-state earthquake drill on Thursday. The annual “Great Central U.S. Shake Out” drill is set for 10:15 a.m.

Participants in the drill will practice “Drop, Cover and Hold On,” which reminds people to drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table and hold on to the furniture and be prepared to move with the item until the shaking ends.

Patti Thompson, IEMA spokeswoman, says there are already 300,000 Illinois residents registered for the multi-state drill. That includes schools, businesses, government agencies, families and others.
Illinois sits on two fault lines, the New Madrid Fault and the Wabash Valley Fault.

To register, go to www.shakeout.org/centralus.  Registered participants will receive additional information about the drill and earthquake preparedness.
