Springfield - Illinois State Police (ISP) officials announce enforcement plans for the up-coming Super Bowl weekend.
 
The Illinois State Police will strictly enforce moving violations during this Super Bowl weekend with an emphasis on the FATAL-4 violations: DUI, Speeding, Distracted Driving and Seat Belts. ISP Troopers issued more than 1000 FATAL-4 citations during the 2012 Super Bowl weekend.
 
Alcohol is a leading factor in fatal traffic crashes, especially during celebratory weekends.  In 2011, 278 people were killed on Illinois highways as a result of drunk drivers, a figure which represents one-third of the total crash related fatalities for that year.  Last year, four lives were lost as a result of alcohol related crashes during Super Bowl Sunday.  It is for these reasons ISP officials are reminding Super Bowl fans to celebrate responsibly with a designated driver.    
 
"Driving under the influence is still the number one cause for traffic crashes and fatalities during the holidays, and Super Bowl weekend is no different,” said ISP Director Hiram Grau.  “The Illinois State Police will strictly enforce DUI and will target those violators who place their lives and the lives of others at risk when they choose alcohol over safety,” he stressed.
 
The ISP is urging motorists to make this Super Bowl Sunday one to remember, not one to regret.  Help keep the roads safe by planning ahead and designating a driver.
