Late yesterday afternoon the Decatur Police Department responded to a domestic battery call on the 1000 block of E. Leafland Street. Upon arrival, officers found the victim outside of her residence while the suspect, Melvin Lowe, remained inside and began throwing objects at the officers from an upstairs window. The suspected then retreated back into the house and down to the first floor where he grabbed several large kitchen knives. The suspect began waving the knives around in a threatening manner, demanding the police shoot him. The officers on scene kept the suspect contained inside the building and a trained negotiator was called. Officer Kara Flannery began a dialog with the suspect, resulting in the suspect surrendering to police.
Melvin Lowe was arrested and booked into the Macon County Jail on domestic battery with a prior conviction, criminal damage to state supported property over $500, resisting/obstructing police, and aggravated assault charges. Neither the suspect nor any of the officers on scene received any significant injuries.
