Progress showing on penguin project

DECATUR-- A few weeks into the building of the penguin exhibit and zoo officials are happy with the progress.

Jim Keifer, Director of Operations with the Park District says the construction crew is working to finish up some infrastructure work and will hopefully be ready to poor the concrete foundation within the coming week.  Assistant Zoo Director Ken Frye echoed that statement…

“It’s just all so weather dependent, especially these next two months.  If they can get the footings poured and the walls up and can get to the inside work then we will have a good shot at getting them here by the beginning of summer.

They were reluctant to set a firm date of arrival for the birds, as the harshest months of winter are still to come.  Frye did say however, that there will be penguins at Scovill Zoo by the end of 2013.

Penguins will not be the only new animal at the zoo in the coming months.  Frye also said they were getting a new zebra in April.  The zoo already has one zebra, Chad, who Frye says, “needs a friend.”  The new zebra will be coming from the Tulsa zoo.
