Davis sworn into 113th congress

WASHINGTON D.C.-- Yesterday was yet another milestone in a whirlwind 9 month period for congressmen elect Rodney Davis as he was sworn in to Congress with the rest of his freshman class.

The oath was administered by House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

“It is an honor to represent the people of Illinois’ 13th Congressional District in Washington,” said Davis. “The oath I took today is something that I take very seriously, and I will be unwavering in my fight to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

The text of the Oath of Office is as follows:

“I, (name of Member), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”

Davis acknowledged that he was stepping into congress during a rough time, but he expressed optimism that he, and his fellow congressmen, had what it takes to get the job done…

“I’m optimistic that if enough of us are willing to work with the legislatures that are already here we will get things done.  However, if we fall into the same political partisanship of the last few years, it will be a failure by us as congress.” Davis said, “And we just can’t let that happen.”

Davis said that personally he felt that one of the most important issues congress had to address was the formation of a long-term farm bill, one to replace the temporary one granted by the Fiscal Cliff Agreement.

Davis was joined on the floor by his children, Toryn, Clark and Griffin, while his wife, Shannon, and other family members and friends watched from the House Gallery.
