Honor Flight gives veteran's a chance to be honored on Veteran's Day

DECATUR-- A weekend trip to Washington D.C. will give 71 WWII veterans a chance to be recognized on Veteran’s Day.

The 22nd Honor Flight will be departing Decatur Airport on Saturday morning and will take a group of Vets to do some sightseeing at the nation’s capital.

President of Honor Flight of Central Illinois Don Niehart says that the vets will do a variety of activities in just less than 24 hours…

“We will see the WWII Memorial, of course and be the guests of honor at their Veteran’s Day Ceremony, we will also go to the Korea and Vietnam War Memorials, we will go to the Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corp Memorials, as well as attend Arlington to watch the changing of the guard.”

Family and friends of the traveling vets are also encouraged to make it out to the Decatur Airport to welcome the veteran’s home from the trip.

“We hope to land around 7 o’clock and hope to have several hundred people out there waving flags and that sort of thing, welcoming these guys back home.  There will be a color guard out there, and there will be a small section of the municipal band playing patriotic tunes."

Their flight is expected to land at 7 p.m. on Sunday night.
