SPRINGFIELD-- Twenty Illinois National Guardsmen are home, after spending most of 2012 in deployment.
The BEST (Bilateral Embedded Staff Team) A9 is made up of 20 guardsmen from all over the state. Sgt. Michael Camacho, a public affairs specialist for the Guard at Camp Lincoln in Springfield, says the unit was in Afghanistan to assist Polish forces which are over there. “They’re all brought together to form one unit,” says Camacho.
Those left behind made do. At least one new baby met her father in person for the first time. Her mother said the baby got to know her dad’s face and voice through Skype, and the mom also had been wearing the dad’s clothes so the baby could get to know his scent, too.
