Police to increase patrols in days leading up to Halloween

SPRINGFIELD-- State and local police will be on the lookout for drunk drivers in the days leading up to Halloween.

Officers will be out in heavy force cracking down on anyone drinking and driving, not wearing a seatbelt or speeding this weekend and through Halloween.

It can be a dangerous time on the roads says state department of transportation spokesperson Josh Kauffman

“Over the past 8 years in Illinois 31 individuals lost their lives and over 2,000 were injured in over 8,500 motor vehicle crashes.  There tends to be a higher number of accidents during Halloween.”

Kauffman says that alcohol was a factor in many of the accidents.  He also says to remember that state law requires everyone to be buckled up, even those riding in the back seat.
