Decatur joins with several other central Illinois communities in an effort to keep Mahomet Aquifer clean

DECATUR-- The city of Decatur will be joining with several other central Illinois towns including Champaign, Urbana, Normal, and even the University of Illinois in a fight to keep hazardous waste out of the Clinton landfill and thus keeping the Mahomet Aquifer clean.  The assistance will come with some cost to Decatur, at a tune of $80,000 dollars, but Mayor Mike McElroy says keeping an estimated 100,000 citizen’s water clean is of the upmost importance…

Decatur does not pull directly from the aquifer, but one of the emergency wells, located in Dewitt County is located 10 miles from the landfill.  Water Manager Keith Alexander says that in times of a drought, when we rely heavily on the emergency wells, some of the water pulled could come from under the landfill.
