SPRINGFIELD-- Illinois is coming close to completing a high speed rail segment on the route from St. Louis to Chicago.  Gov. Pat Quinn will be joined by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and other dignitaries on a trip from Joliet to Normal on Oct. 19.  On a portion of that route, from Dwight to Pontiac, trains can travel at 110 mph.  The portion has been designated as the initial test segment for the St. Louis-to-Chicago route.  The majority of track and crossing upgrades have been completed. IDOT and others continue to work on determining the best route through Springfield, from Chicago to Joliet and from Alton to St. Louis. The goal is to have high-speed rail from Joliet to Alton by 2015 and eventually from Chicago to St. Louis.
