DPS 61's H.I.P. Parade and Rally encourages parental involvement in their child's education



DECATUR-- Decatur Public Schools is hosting the second annual H.I.P. Parade and Rally to celebrate and encourage parental involvement throughout the year. The H.IP (Having Involved Parents) event was initiated in 2011 to celebrate the start of the school year and celebrate the role parents play in their child’s education.  All Decatur Public Schools and more than 20 community organizations will participate in the H.I.P Parade and Rally on Saturday, October 6, 2012 in the park on the 300 block of N. Water St.
 
The parade will kick off at 11:00 a.m. in the Ameren IP parking lot on East Macon Street.  Decatur Public School students, parents and faculty will walk north on Water Street, ending in the park to the west of the ADM City Center where the rally will be held.  DPS student music and dance groups will entertain the crowds.
 
“We are looking forward to another great H.I.P event. Last year there were more than 1200 parents, students, staff and community members that come out to show their support for the students and the schools,” Superintendent Gloria Davis said.  “This event represents the strong support our parents and staff show their students throughout the school year - support that helps them to be successful in school and in life.  At DPS, we recognize, encourage and celebrate the network of parents that take an active role in education.”
 
As part of the rally, each school and participating community organization will have a tables set up with activities for kids as well as information for parents on programs and activities throughout the year.   Participating community organizations include:  the YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club of Decatur, Caring Black Men, Macon County Historical Museum, Sylvan Learning Center, Decatur Area Education Coalition, Macon County Health Department, American Red Cross, Decatur Park District, Teen Health, DPS Foundation, Girl Scouts of Central Illinois, Huntington Learning Center, Junior Achievement, Macon County Conservation District, Mothers on the Move for Success (M.O.M.S.), Regional Office of Education, Richland Community College, United Way, TRiO —Academic Talent Search College Prep Program from UIUC and the African-American Cultural and Genealogical Society Museum.
 
The entertainment lineup will student singers, musicians, dancers, and performers.  Food and drinks will be available for sale by area vendors.
