Obama Blowing Away Romney in Illinois; Lead Not '08 Big

SPRINGFIELD - A recent poll shows President Obama winning in November in Illinois, but not by as much as you might think.

The poll from We Ask America shows Obama winning by 17 percent over Republican challenger Mitt Romney among likely voters.  The President won by 25 percent in 2008 in the Land of Lincoln.

The biggest change comes among Illinois men, who support Obama over Romney by just 5 points as opposed to 15 in ’08.  If the election was today, women would vote blue 59 percent to 32.

Romney strategists projected he would need roughly 20 percent of the Chicago vote to have a competitive chance statewide; right now he has just 11 percent support out of the city.

Romney does lead overall downstate, 46 to 45 percent.
