Decatur – Republican candidate for the 48th Senate District, Mike McElroy, today called for a balanced budget and the elimination of the $7 billion tax hike. McElroy said, “My promise to the voters of the 48th District is that I will work to balance the budget, so that the 67% tax increase on working families and small businesses can be repealed."
“This election is the voters’ first chance to voice their opinion on the tax hike that was passed in the middle of the night by an outgoing General Assembly. This election is a referendum on the tax and spend policies and heavy-handed tactics of Chicago politicians and their allies.”
Although the tax increase has a sunset date, an analysis by the Civic Federation found that the budget deficit will swell over the coming years if sweeping reforms are not made, casting doubt on whether it will be allowed to expire.
“The status quo is not working for Illinois,” said McElroy. “Times are tough, and Governor Quinn and Senate President Cullerton chose to raise taxes rather than make the choices needed to balance the budget.”
Mike McElroy is a businessman and is currently serving as Mayor of Decatur. During his tenure, he and the City Council have balanced the City budget for four years. He is running for an open seat in the Illinois Senate.
