Barnes Garage Discussion Grinding Toward Decisions

DECATUR - A decision on what will happen to the parking garage attached to the Barnes Citizens Building in downtown Decatur is still months from reality, but the City is ready to move on the condemned structure.

City Manager Ryan McCrady says there are factors involved that aren’t always simple, most notably the fact that the city does not own the garage…

The biggest physical draw back is that the Barnes building's ventilation system sits on the roof of the garage.  McCrady says the situation becomes especially tricky because the building can't be left without air flow while the air units are moved or replaced.  Cost of removing is also a major factor is slowing the logistics of the project.

The city says the structure must be torn down or fixed this winter.  The cost is estimated in the hundreds of thousands and won’t be publicly discussed as the bid is still out for the project.
