WWII Memorial Dedication Set, Construction Still Progressing
The long-awaited opening of Decatur’s World War II Memorial has been set. The World War II Memorial Committee says the construction is progressing well, and a dedication ceremony is scheduled for Friday, September 7th at noon.
The plans for the memorial have changed, halted, back shelved, and resurfaced countless times in the last 8 years. The committee held a groundbreaking ceremony on April 27 of this year with initial construction beginning shortly thereafter. While the original projected date of completion was set for Flag Day in June, an announcement by Pete Nicholls Jr. at Memorial Day remembrance in Fairview Park revealed that more changes to the plans would push back the finish.
The final cost of the memorial in front of the Decatur Civic Center will total over $300,000.
