New Laws Give Power of Public Safety to Local Fire Departments, Colleges
Some new laws look to increase public safety in Illinois.
The laws assist local fire departments in purchasing equipment, make sure all college and university dorms are equipped with proper fire suppression systems, and streamline the testing and hiring process for firefighters.
Under the new laws, colleges and universities have an additional time to ensure dormitories have sprinkler systems. Before the law, dorms had to be compliant by Jan. 1, 2013. The new law gives colleges and universities until Sept. 1, 2014. If they fail to comply by the deadline a $1,000-a-day fine will be assessed.
Another law will help fire departments when purchasing equipment. Fire protection districts that buy fire vehicles manufactured partially or fully in the state can receive low-interest or in some cases no-interest loans.
Another law streamlines the process for testing and hiring firefighters and makes other technical changes to examination procedures
