In the aftermath of the deadly theater shooting in Colorado, Gov. Pat Quinn has penned an amendatory veto banning “assault weapons.” Quinn latched onto a bill that would allow Illinois residents to buy ammunition by mail, and rewrote it to ban “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines…
The bill makes it illegal to manufacture, possess, deliver, sell or purchase semi-automatic assault weapons, assault weapon attachments, .50-caliber rifles and .50-caliber ammunition. Some people – police officers, wardens, and National Guard members – are exempt from the ban. Should the bill become law with legislative approval, those who own the banned guns can retain their firearms but only if proof of ownership is provided to the Illinois State Police.
