A panel of lawmakers from the Illinois House has voted 11 to 1 in favor of expelling a fellow legislator who’s accused of taking a bribe in exchange for help in securing a state grant. Derrick Smith was a no-show at a hearing to determine his fate as a state lawmaker and Dave Ellis, the legal counsel for the Select Committee on Discipline did nothing to hide his disappointment in Smith’s decision…
Smith’s lawyer, Victor Henderson, says he didn’t show because he didn’t think he would get a fair shake. The vote was 11 – 1 in favor of expulsion. The full House will now vote on the issue. Smith is also awaiting trial in federal court.
