Summer Lunch Program for Kids Available in Macon County
What happens to kids who get their breakfast and lunch at school when school is out for the summer? Sometimes they don’t get breakfast or lunch.
“For the state of Illinois, there are nearly 700,000 kids that are at risk of hunger. That’s about 22 percent of the state’s children that are relying on resources to help them get through the day and get through the summer,” says Shondra Jenkins of the food service provider Sodexo, which has the contract to provide school lunches in a number of districts.
She says the USDA has summer breakfast and lunch sites set up for eligible kids, usually at schools or parks, but the kids and their families often don’t know about them. You can call 866-3-HUNGRY for their nearby spot, or visit the website for more sites.
