A fatal crash on US-51 early Wednesday afternoon leaves one driver dead and the other in the hospital.  Christian County sheriff’s deputies, the Illinois State Police, and Assumption volunteer firemen responded to the head-on collision at around 12:50pm. 

Christian County Coroner Amy Winans declared the driver of a green Hyundai dead on the scene.  The second driver, 80-year old Janet Tankersley of Assumption, was flown to Memorial Hospital in Springfield with non life threatening injuries. US-51 was closed for approximately two hours before traffic resumed. 

Winans is not releasing the name of the driver while the family is notified.
