Sangamon County Judge Makes Ruling on Public Information Case

A Circuit Judge in Sangamon County is siding with the Illinois Attorney General; agreeing that all electronic messages sent by City Council Members during meetings should be made public.  The judge argues that all messages sent; even on a personal device are public knowledge according to Illinois Freedom of Information Act.  Decatur City Manager Ryan McCrady says that while he supports the idea of sharing information with the public he has never e-mailed or texted any information during meetings in his 4 years…

The Champaign City Council turned over 24 pages of emails but argued that the rest weren’t public record because they were sent on council members’ personal accounts and phones.  The council has 30 days to appeal the judge’s ruling.
