Treasurer's Return Program Has A New Name
The Illinois state treasurer’s office is re-branding and re-launching its unclaimed property division. What has been known as “Cash Dash” is now “I Cash.”
“We did our focus groups, and, come to find out, there really wasn’t that much equity” in the “Cash Dash” name, says Treasurer Dan Rutherford. “Come to find out, the consumer really didn’t connect to what it was.”
The program holds money from old bank accounts, the contents of old safe deposit boxes, and other goods, cash, and securities. When available, the names of the rightful owners are publicized in newspapers and online.
Rutherford says through aggressive publicity and the advent of social media, 2011 saw a record $101 million returned to the public through the program. Rutherford estimates about one in eight Illinoisans has something to claim, of a total worth $1.5 billion.
