SPRINGFIELD-- Citing the lack of bi-partisan support, the State Senate has decided to scrap the bill proposing stricter gun laws in regards to semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips.
 
The Illinois Senate is expected to adjourn this afternoon without bringing up the proposals.  Spokeswoman for senate President John Cullerton did not offer up a date as to when the proposal could be brought up again, simply saying, “We will take some time to work on these important issues to advance them in the future.”
 
The bill was heavily opposed by both the NRA and several gun manufacturers throughout the state, many of which said they would move their companies elsewhere if the bill is passed.
 
The suggested legislation aimed to cut down on the sale and ownership of semiautomatic weapons that included handguns and rifles while also limiting ammunition magazines to 10 or fewer rounds.  It would, however, grandfather in those who already own such weapons, as long as they registered their firearms with the Illinois State Police.
 
Though not likely, both proposals could be brought up again next week when the Illinois House convenes for their ‘Lame Duck’ session.
 
Governor Pat Quinn, a heavy supporter of stricter gun laws says he will work towards amending the legislation in hopes that it could be brought up during the spring session.
