Police crackdown leads to 12 arrests stemming from weekend violence



DECATUR—In the days following last weekend in which 5 shootings were reported in Decatur, the police department promised a crackdown on violence and as of Thursday the department had arrested 12 individuals and seized 7 illegal firearms as a direct result of executed search warrants related to the weekend violence.
 
“If ever there is a signal that the Decatur Police Department is not going to tolerate those persons illegally possessing and firing guns, this should definitely put them on notice.  We will relentlessly pursue those individuals who choose to put the law abiding members of our community in harm’s way,” Deputy Chief of Police Dave Dickerson said.  “Our officer’s get paid to encounter criminals armed with firearms and we will make every effort to prevent those citizens who are just trying to lead a peaceful life from having to do the same.”
 
On Monday, five individuals were arrested pursuant to a search warrant that was executed at 1140 East Moore Street.  Those 5 individuals are Brylin D. Turnbo, Martez T. Cliff, Vincent T. Turner, rico R. Anderson, and Darnell R. Whitfield.  All of the above arrested were arrested on charges of armed violence and possession of a stolen firearm.
 
On Tuesday, Decatur Police arrested four more individuals after a search warrant was conducted at 1234 East Leafland.  Those four individuals are, Deandre M. Smith, Terail K. Smith, Sharon K. Smith, and Steven J. Couch.  All the individuals arrested were charged with various cases of possession of firearms by a felon, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.  On Tuesday, police also arrested Jericha A. Yarbary for possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and various firearm offenses.
 
On Thursday, two individuals were arrested related to the shootings that happened on Sunday.  Rakem C. Hill and Elijah J. Muhammad were arrested after a search warrant was conducted at the property on 1320 East Lawrence and the shooting in the area of the 1200 block of North Union Street.  Following Hill’s arrest, an additional search warrant was conducted at 1464 East Leafland
 
In addition to the twelve arrests, police also arrested 17 year old Gregory Hudson in the parking lot of Jabroni’s Bar on Friday night.  Hudson was arrested for firearm and drug charges.  At the time of his arrest Hudson was in possession of a loaded SKS Rifle, crack cocaine, and cannabis.
 
“We are proud that there has been a significant decrease in violence over the last few years and this type of criminal activity will simply not be tolerated,” Dickerson said.  Dickerson also said that more arrests could be near, and those individuals, “should be very concerned about detectives giving them a visit in the very near future.”
