Police Beefing Up Enforcement For Holiday Weekend

State and local police are beefing up enforcement for the fourth of July holiday weekend. The Illinois state police and about 200 local police agencies will hold over 100 roadside safety checks through the weekend looking for those not wearing their seat belt and drunk drivers. State transportation safety director Mike Stout says the Fourth of July holiday has proven to be a deadly weekend in the past. Over the past five years 66 people have died on Illinois roadways over the holiday. 36 of those deaths were accident related. Police remind motorists to plan in advance if they are going to be drinking at a fourth of July party by either taking a cab, riding with a designated driver or sleeping over.
