Negotiations Between City and Union Hits Road Block
|
|
After nearly two years of negotiations with Decatur city officials, AFSCME local 268 filed an unfair labor practice claim against the city citing violation of good faith bargaining. Yesterday, the city submitted its last best offer to the union in hopes of coming to an agreement. It is the same offer that was submitted in September of 2007. Under the proposal, city workers would receive a 5% pay raise retroactive to the end of the original contract, 4% for 2007 and another 4% as of May 1 of this year. Also city employees have to pay a larger portion of their health insurance premiums by choosing from 1 of 3 different coverage tiers. This has been the major sticking point of the negotiations, as union officials believe the city is requiring its lowest paid workers to pay the most in health insurance costs. |
