Deliberations Begin In Rezko Trial
|
|
Deliberations now begin in the political corruption trial of Tony Rezko after the Jury took yesterday off. Towards the end of his closing arguments Tuesday, Rezko's attorney, Joseph Duffy again discounted the testimony of the governments "star witness" Stuart Levine, calling him a con and a cheat. Assistant U.S. Atty. Chris Niewoehner (KNEE-whan-er) gave the government's rebuttal, telling jurors that Rezko was the one on trial, not Levine. At the close of the arguments and rebuttal, Duffy asked for a mistrial, but was turned down by Judge Amy St. Eve. It's common for the request at this stage in a case. St. Eve gave jurors instructions Tuesday evening with instructions to return the federal court house to deliberate today. Rezko faces 24 charges including mail and wire fraud, aiding and abetting, money laundering and attempted extortion. He's accused of being behind a pay to play scheme involving state politics and state boards. |
